The City of Sterling Heights is hosting four open house-style public forums this September and October to help educate, share information and answer questions about the upcoming Recreating Recreation ballot initiative.
The four forums will be held in both the daytime and evening hours in an effort to give options to the most residents possible. At each forum, City leaders will be present to discuss proposed project details, showcase renderings, explain the financial breakdown, and more. All four will be held at the Sterling Heights Senior Center, 40200 Utica Road:
• 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7
• 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 19
• 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19
• 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11
The proposed Recreating Recreation mileage will be up for voter approval on the Nov. 8 General Election ballot. The initiative is an effort to further enhance the City’s unique and abundant recreational resources as well as add new exciting placemaking opportunities to impact the future of the City and generations to come.
Other recreation enhancements proposed include improvements to the existing Nature Center, installation of a bike/hike trail linking paths throughout the city and adding canoe/kayak launches and other accessibility to the Clinton River. The plan also includes improvements to all of the City’s 25 major and neighborhood parks including resurfacing paths, renovating athletic courts and fields, replacing play structures, installing picnic tables and garbage cans, resurfacing parking lots and other improvements.
The value of the Recreating Recreation initiative is about $45 million and would equate to an average annual cost per household of $62.96 per year to Sterling Heights residents for 20 years. The cost covers the capital expenditures for the new structures and improvements, including an operating budget moving forward.
